These substations are designed to efficiently handle the transformation, distribution, transmission, measurement, and compensation of electrical energy. They also ensure system control, protection, and seamless communication functions. Typically, the substation houses three compartments: a high voltage compartment (equipped with advanced high/medium voltage switchgear such as a ring main unit or gas-insulated switchgear with a rated voltage of up to 40.5kV), a low voltage compartment, and a transformer compartment (featuring either a three-phase oil-immersed transformer or a cast resin dry-type transformer).
